The Roundup with Scott

Welcome to another edition of The Lasso. We are excited once again to share upcoming events, promotions, service announcements, and highlights from our upcoming and current projects.

Hopefully, by now, everyone is getting settled into 2024 and ready for employee appreciation week. Please RSVP using the link below; we hope to see everyone attend. We also have planned a fun night in San Antonio that did not make it to this edition but stayed tuned for that announcement.

On the construction front, we have several projects moving forward from the preconstruction phase, which is a good sign for the Texas markets we support. We have a diverse mix of projects driving to the finish line this year, along with a few that have just executed GMPs, and kickoff in the field is just around the corner. In addition, there are several strategic wins that have extended preconstruction efforts just starting, which creates a healthy backlog for the next few years.

I do want to thank everyone again for the outstanding results and strong finish to 2023. The Texas Business Unit ended up exceeding both our profit and sales goals, and our teams have set the stage for great results in 2024. We could not have achieved such success without careful planning, swarming our challenging projects, and simply driving positive results on every project.

Our engagement team met just a few weeks back. Please make sure you have taken a look at the invites to some great events coming up in April and May. We hope to see your active participation again this year. As I mentioned above, we have employee appreciation week just around the corner, and our annual Gilbane Cares Golf Tournament is a great chance to interact with the entire business unit and provide continued support to our selected local organizations.

Please check out this latest edition, and we look forward to a great 2024. See you all soon!

Q: What are the markets Texas is focusing on for the year?

We’re continuing our efforts in the K-12 and Corporate markets while pushing forward in Healthcare and Higher Ed.

Q: What trends are you seeing for 2024 and beyond?

A: A lot of city/state tax bonds are being approved, which facilitates guaranteed dollar projects. With it being an election year, the private sector is notably slow but could develop a clearer picture once the new administration is underway and brings in new economic market focuses.

Q: How is Gilbane perceived in Texas markets right now?

A: Our brand is strong in our core markets, reflected in our current string of client surveys we’ve been receiving. We need to continue to build off our recent project successes as we drive our presence with new markets and in particular new clients within our existing markets.

Q: What are the markets Texas is focusing on for the year? Q: How are we overcoming our biggest challenges in the markets we’re pursuing?

A: Brand awareness and experience are the toughest obstacles to overcome when pursuing projects in markets we haven’t been active in as of late. We continue to reach out to industry partners with introduction meetings while also staying in touch with Gilbane champions as they move to various owner and A/E firms. Focused marketing efforts and continued success from the doer-seller efforts are having a great impact on our presence in the Texas market.

Q: How do you see the industry/markets changing in the next few years? What are we doing to stay ahead?

A: We continue to see fewer and fewer hard bids with a focus on CM@R and design-build work on the rise. Owners want to get their teams under contract sooner to counteract the lead time issues on critical components of projects. Design-build/design-assist contracts continue to come out more regularly as well, and it seems as if the design firms need more and more assistance with the robust market here in Texas and the number of project opportunities out for execution.

Project Award Announcements

Phase 2 Clear Lake MP 110422 2

In an effort to be better prepared for future storms and potential impact/damage to the Property, Moody Gardens issued a Standby Services agreement. Gilbane will be on call to provide emergency response, temporary services, and CM at-risk services should the need arise.

This Standby Services agreements are issued in 3 years of lengths, with Gilbane having been awarded the most recent expiring agreement. Gilbane’s successful, long-standing relationship at the resort was a testament to the strength of the relationship with Moody Gardens over the last 30+ years and was a beneficial factor in the renewal of this agreement for Gilbane.

HCA Healthcare is one of the nation's leading healthcare services providers. It comprises 182 hospitals and 2,300+ sites in 20 states and the United Kingdom. HCA Clear Lake project award is a vertical & horizontal expansion of the campus’s South tower. This project will be a heavily prefabricated project with exterior panels, bathrooms, headwalls, and footwalls all being shipped to site for just-in-time installations. These expanded building sections will provide expanded Women’s care and add additional patient beds to support the region’s growing community needs. The project win is a testament to the Doer-Seller efforts of the recent completed project at HCA Houston Healthcare Medical Center, along with Gilbane’s strong national relations with HCA.
