of a school serving 3,000 students

To meet rising academic and technological expectations, Houston ISD brought in Gilbane Building Company to renovate and replace the existing Lamar High School. The team worked diligently to make sure the campus remained open throughout the construction process.

New Central Plant
As with any extensive renovation, the team faced a myriad of challenges. One of the significant challenges was fitting all of the program requirements onto the site (academics, athletics, parking, and playing fields) while maintaining the school's existing operations during construction. Once the footprint size and location of the education and athletic facilities were finalized, Gilbane studied the overall impact of that placement on the project. Through a series of workshops, it was determined to create a separate central plant that would be built as an early project. This new facility would back-feed the existing school and service the new one.

Temporary Bus Lane
The team also needed to manage student, faculty, and bus movement during the project to keep all parties safe. The solution was to create a temporary bus lane north of the site, away from the construction work. In addition, they implemented a swing space strategy using trailers to allow the existing facility renovation scope to proceed while the school was in session.

These solutions to challenges resulted in six-month schedule savings and significant cost optimization, but more importantly, they kept the existing high school in the entire operation throughout construction.
